FAQ

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a complementary health approach in which practitioners place their hands lightly on or just above a person, with the goal of directing energy to help facilitate the person’s own healing response. It’s based on an Eastern belief in an energy that supports the body’s innate or natural healing abilities.

How does Distant Reiki work?

The distance symbol is used to cross any distance in time or space. It allows practitioners to perform reiki on someone who is not physically present. Distance Reiki works according to quantum physics and an ancient principle called the Hermetic Law of Similarity, which holds that we are all connected, as we are all made of energy and part of a larger whole.

Who can get Reiki?

Distance Reiki can be sent to anyone, anywhere and at any time—with permission being invoked or received in some way.

Anyone can get Reiki and at any age. Pregnant mothers can use it to help with their changing bodies. Children can use it to help with anxiety. Teens and adults can use it for stress, chronic illness, or life changes. Pets can even benefit from Reiki.

What might I experience?

The experience of Reiki is subjective, changeable, and sometimes very subtle. People often experience heat in the practitioner's hands, but sometimes the practitioner's hands feel refreshingly cool. Other common experiences are subtle pulsations where the practitioner's hands are placed or cascading waves of pulsations throughout the body.

People often comment how comforting they find the experience of Reiki to be. An interesting study reported that recipients frequently feel that they are hovering in a threshold state of consciousness, simultaneously aware of their surroundings and deeply indrawn. Some people fall into a deep, sleeplike meditative state. Sometimes the experience of Reiki is dramatic, while for other people, the first session in particular may be uneventful, although they feel somehow better afterward. The most common experience is an almost immediate release of stress and a feeling of deep relaxation.

Reiki is cumulative and even people who don't notice much the first time usually have progressively deeper experiences if they continue. Besides the immediate experience of the Reiki, you may notice other changes that continue to unfold as the day goes on: perhaps stronger digestion, a sense of being more centered and poised and less reactive, and sleeping deeply that night.

What do you need from me before the session?

Please provide your full name and location in advance of your session. In addition, an optional photo of your pet or loved one also helps.

This includes your full name, your exact location (as exact as you can get it! For example, hospital name and room number), as well as your city and state/province. An exact location is needed for the accurate channelling of universal life force energy.

What do I do prior to the session?

Practice spiritual hygiene. Incorporating spiritual hygiene in your daily life can have a significant impact on your overall wellbeing. ‘Spiritual’ as the concept of a connection to something greater than ourselves which can involve searching for a deeper meaning in life, and ‘hygiene’ refers to the creation and reinforcement of good habits that promote health — like brushing our teeth or exercising.

Listed are things to take into consideration prior to your session that amplify the healing energy.

  • Pick a space where you can relax, reflect, and lay down undisturbed. My favorite spot is in the comfort of my bed.

  • Turn on the sound healing music that is sent to you prior to your session and let it play in the background.

  • Use the restroom before your session.

  • Hydrate. Have a glass of water or grab your favorite reusable water bottle and keep it nearby. Avoid eating a heavy meal beforehand so that the body can direct its energy towards healing versus digestion.

  • Reflect on your intention for the energy healing you are about to receive and know that Reiki has a consciousness of its own and knows where to go and what to do. You will receive exactly what you need at this time.

  • Drop into your heart space. Give gratitude for this moment here and now. And for the journey you are on. Remember, you are worthy of receiving healing. Give thanks to yourself for taking the time to care for yourself.

For established clients who book a “Reiki quickie”, no special preparations are needed.

What do I do during the session?

As the session progresses, you will feel more relaxed. If you become uncomfortable, you can adjust your position at any time. Be sure to grab anything that will add to your comfort, such as additional support under your knees, a blanket, or socks. This is your special time.

Receiving Reiki is a wonderfully passive experience. Don't try to relax, just let the Reiki relax you. Your state will shift naturally as the session proceeds. Meanwhile feel free to daydream, enjoy the music, or simply observe your breath or the sensations of the therapy.

What happens after the session?

Do not expect a diagnosis, as that is not part of Reiki. Many practitioners make common sense suggestions for after-care, such as drinking water and following your body's needs.

People commonly report a sense of calmness, mental clarity, and sleeping well after Reiki. Although people typically leave a Reiki session feeling refreshed, sometimes they notice feeling more tired in the evening than usual. This is not viewed as an adverse reaction, but rather as the body's natural healing response, something to be heeded. Listen to your body.

How many sessions should I receive?

Occasional sessions are great for relaxation and maintaining overall energetic wellbeing. Your practitioner may suggest a series of sessions. Four sessions is a traditional recommendation and gives you time to evaluate what benefits you are receiving. Discuss with your practitioner how best to space the sessions to suit your needs and your schedule.

In the presence of a serious health challenge (emotional, mental, physical, spiritual), regular sessions are usually necessary. Reiki practitioners often recommend four sessions over four days. These don’t need to be given by the same practitioner. The therapeutic benefits of any modality are cumulative and the more frequently you seek it out, the more responsive your body will become.
